Have you considered utilizing the untapped ad space between your double-sided billboards? This space is often called the end cap or “V” on a billboard structure. This may be a source of extra revenue for your plant if you have the right conditions.
.
We talked to Roland Digital Media about how they have been utilizing this space and what to look for when considering it for existing billboard structures.
.
• The first thing to do is go through your normal permitting process and see what the rules and regulations are. You may be in a county with no zoning so you likely wouldn’t have any issues. Some cities will consider it another sign face and not allow it, however, your structures may be grandfathered in like in the case of many of the Roland billboards.
.
• In Tennessee, you only have to worry about state permits if the end cap billboard will be facing a state road.
.
• If you are in a rural county with no zoning, you will probably not have any issues.
.
• Another factor to consider is if the new face gets enough eyes on it to be appealing to advertisers. If the end cap faces a road or even a busy enough parking lot, it may be worth looking into.
.
• You will need to have easy access to the face as well and the ability to add lighting to make it more appealing to advertisers.
.
• Some billboard companies have taken the “Don’t ask for permission, ask for forgiveness later” approach, however, do this at your own risk. If your codes don’t address it, it may be worth taking a chance.
.
Even though a sign face is much more pleasing than looking at a bunch of iron, some cities will still deny it. We recommend going through the permitting process first.
